Winners Announced for Fourth Annual Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest

Northampton, MA (PRWeb) February 15, 2007 -- Tom Howard Books is pleased to announce the results from its fourth annual Tom Howard/John H. Reid Poetry Contest. Debbie Camelin of Ottawa, Ontario, won first prize and $1,000 for her poem "Intimidation". Hundreds of entries were received from around the world.

Camelin's dramatic poem is set in a South Africa still overshadowed by the legacy of apartheid. A group of black women successfully challenge a white policeman who is harassing a black youth; their courage in speaking truth to power is revealed to be stronger than the brute force of a corrupt state. Contest judge Dee C. Konrad observed, "Ms. Camelin's 'Intimidation' highlights a determination of political forces and an ongoing resistance to that pressure and persistent personal pain. Significant blocks of structured lines, deliberately spaced irregularly to represent the lack of communication, indicate the policies against freedom and the insistence for the freedom of recognition." The poem is based on a real-life incident. Camelin also won a High Distinction award of $100 for her poem "Lobsterman".

Second prize of $400 went to Noble Collins for "Old Hawk", a taut narrative of predator and prey in a race for survival. Collins also won a High Distinction award of $100 for his poem "Central Park". These are Mr. Collins' first published poems. Contest judge John H. Reid said, "His poetry sings with life, with rhythm, with passion. Words are his compliant tools, his paints, his servile pigments. Yet even more importantly, Mr. Collins has a voice. And above all else, a poet must have a distinctive voice, a pleasing voice, a subtle voice that colors all his work, no matter what its subject matter. The judges are thrilled to have discovered Mr. Collins and to acclaim him as a major poet."

Jessica Morrow won third prize and $200 for her poignant, image-rich poem "For Jen", an elegy for a childhood friend who died in a car accident. Reid said of this poem, "As a medium to convey the deepest feelings, the elegy has no equal. With commendable economy, Jessica Morrow uses 'flash' recollection and bold, emotional imagery to draw rounded yet heartfelt portraits not only of the lost Jennifer but of her 'best friend'--the narrator herself."

High Distinction awards of $100 each went to Tom Berman, Linda Dousay, Johnmichael Simon, Martin Steele, and Desmond Kon Zhicheng-Mingde. Ten Highly Commended Awards of $70 each and ten Commended Awards of $50 each rounded out the prizes, bringing the total to $3,500.
