Gray Matters, Survivor of a Brain Injury Publishes Intriguing Book of Poetry
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) October 25, 2006 -- These days, brain injury occurs around the world in quite a variety of circumstances; in sports events, motor vehicle accidents, terrorist attacks and war. According to the International Brain Injury Association, head injury is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Twenty to thirty percent of the soldiers returning from Iraq have Traumatic Brain Injuries. More than two percent of the United States' population has sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury and it is almost impossible to know when you will come upon someone with this "invisible disability."
Brain injury is so widespread, yet the average person can't identify a person living with its complications. This lack of knowledge makes a survivor's life quite problematic. Heidi Lerner's reaction to this need for brain injury advocacy is what drove her in writing the book, Gray Matters: Brain injury, the Inside Perspective (www.graymatters4u.com). In it she gives a personal sense of what it is like to walk in the shoes of a brain injury survivor. This book will enable survivors to be better understood by others.
The chapters of the book include topics regarding the disability and therapeutic modalities. With a creative flair, Ms. Lerner informs the readers about head injury; she strikes a chord in sharing personal changes, loss and challenges. The chapter subjects are: brain injury, the symptoms, rehabilitation, the brain, academic rehab, nature/the ocean's healing influence, and brain injury support groups. The Gray Matters website offers a selection of poetry and serves as a resource for brain injury survivors.
In 1989, Heidi Lerner, the author of the book Gray Matters, survived a massive automobile accident and sustained a severe Traumatic Brain Injury. Ms. Lerner, though struggling with cognitive, psychosocial and neurological difficulties, achieved her Master's degree in Special Education specifically for working with brain injury survivors. Presently, Heidi facilitates a brain injury support group called "Gray Matters" at Scripps Hospital in Southern California.
Gray Matters offers an introspective and sometimes humorous view of what it is like to suffer a near-fatal blow to the head and live with it's complications. The book allows you to see through the perspective of a brain injury survivor. The author presents a thorough, subjective viewpoint as well as a professional and objective understanding of brain injury. Gray Matters offers a deeper understanding of the inner-workings of the mind and how in many ways, brain injury affects life as we know it.
